In Pieces

About the show

What if the love that shaped you most was the love that didn’t last?

Spanning three chapters of adulthood, this tender and contemporary song cycle traces the friendships, families and former lovers who leave their mark long after they’re gone. Joey Contreras’s pop-driven songs – streamed tens of millions of times before the show reached the stage in 2021 – become vivid, shifting stories of connection, self-discovery, and the slow work of becoming who you are. Proudly queer-inclusive and emotionally open-ended, In Pieces holds space for the beauty and bruises of love in all its forms.

This is a love story about the people you don’t end up with. See it, feel it, keep the pieces.

I’ve only been to New York once – aptly, in the holidays before I started studying at NIDA. For ten days, I fed voraciously off the ENERGY of that city; sprinting from one Broadway show to another, tracking down the best underground jazz bars, staring starry-eyed at the bright lights of Times Square…

We have aimed to capture the relentless motion and glorious grunge of the city that never sleeps through our design and staging of In Pieces. Set between 2006 and 2014, Joey Contreras’ contemporary American song cycle follows six young people as they fall in and out of love with each other and themselves, ultimately searching for connection in a fragmented world.

It’s been a total joy returning to NIDA to collaborate with such a talented and hard-working group of actors, designers, and technicians. A huge thank you to our musical director Zara and choreographer Freya for bringing your extraordinary artistry to the production – we have all been so lucky to have you on board.

I hope you enjoy this whimsical trip through NYC!
