About the show
Three women stand over a body. What just happened?
Set in a parched outback town, The Bleeding Tree begins with a gunshot. By turns brutal, lyrical and darkly funny, this searing revenge tale reimagines Australian gothic through a fierce, contemporary lens. Hailed as one of the most important Australian plays of the decade, it has won major national awards and toured widely since its premiere at Griffin Theatre Company.
A landmark Australian play, strikingly staged. Don’t look away.

Dino Dimitriadis
Dino Dimitriadis is a multi-award-winning director, dramaturg and creative producer, working across theatre, dance, music, film, fashion and experimental performance. Their practice centres queer performance, trans dramaturgies and intersectional storytelling, building new forms and platforms that shift how stages hold bodies and ideas.
Dino has worked widely as a director, recognised for their distinct visual language and cross-disciplinary approach. Their work spans mainstages, national tours, large-scale music events, fashion runways, intimate queer works, and experimental forms.
There’s so much I could say about the force of Angus Cerini’s writing and the devastating timeliness of this play. But ultimately, everything I want to say is already on the stage: in Angus’ haunting vision and in the work this team has created together. So I’ll leave it at that, and invite you to encounter it on your own terms.
It’s been an utter privilege to return to NIDA to direct this work. The actors, assistant directors, designers and crew members I’ve collaborated with have all worked with extraordinary generosity and commitment. Zarah, Ooen-s’tae and Rashie have approached this material with a breathtaking emotional courage and honesty.
These emerging artists have something urgent to say about the world. They are all creating work in a time that feels increasingly complicated, yet they still dare to feel deeply, imagine fiercely, and believe stories like this can still shake us awake.
This production contains adult themes, coarse language, simulated gunshots and use of an imitation firearm, and references to domestic violence, abuse, sexual assault and animal cruelty. It also contains blackout, occasional sudden loud sounds, use of haze and low fog effects, and theatrical blood.
Suitable for ages 15 and over.
Subject to change during the development of a production.
