This page outlines everything you need to complete your application for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Costume (BFACOS).
Application & Selection Process
The selection process takes place in two rounds:
Round 1: Application, digital portfolio, and garment submission
Round 2: Written response and interview (shortlisted applicants only)
Online Application
Complete the online application form and upload all required documents, including your Digital Portfolio.
What to include
• Photographs or video of finished costume work
• Process documentation (development sketches, construction stages, etc.)
• Images showing construction detail (including garment interiors where relevant)
Requirements
• Maximum: 15 pages
• Include only your strongest work
• Submitted as a single PDF document
• Maximum file size: 80MB

Original Work Requirement
All submissions must comply with NIDA’s Original Work Requirement. This includes that all work must be your own and must not be generated or substantially developed using Artificial Intelligence. Refer to the Admissions Criteria for full details.
Submission
Upload your Portfolio and any other required documents in the Associated File Attachments section of your online application.
• Select Course Specific Requirements in the File Category
• Upload each file separately
You will also need to upload:
• Photo ID (select Photo ID)
• Most Recent Qualification (select Most Recent Qualification Evidence)

File Naming Requirements
Use underscores between all elements. List your surname first, followed by your first name, and follow the format below exactly.

Format: lastname_firstname_BFACOS_2027_documenttype
Examples:
• Portfolio: lastname_firstname_BFACOS_2027_portfolio
• Proof of Identity: lastname_firstname_BFACOS_2027_photoid
• Most Recent Qualification: lastname_firstname_BFACOS_2027_qualification
You must construct ONE garment, using a pattern from the approved pattern list. Refer to the Pattern List for options.
Your task:
• Choose one pattern from the approved list
• Construct the garment for a friend or family member
• Consider the character behind the garment:
1. Who would wear it?
2. When and where would they wear it?
3. Why would they wear it?
Example: Victor, late 40s, attending a 1960s funeral.
Outcome
All applications, portfolios and garments are reviewed by the selection panel after the closing date.
You will be notified by email of the outcome of your application. Shortlisted applicants will progress to Round Two.
Written Response
Shortlisted applicants will be asked to respond in writing to costume images provided in your invitation email. This must be completed prior to your interview.
Interview
If shortlisted, you will be invited to a 30-minute interview (online via Microsoft Teams or in person).
The interview is an opportunity for us to get to know you—your background, skills, creative interests, and aspirations.
During the interview, we will discuss:
• Your garment project
• Your portfolio
• Your creative interests and approach to costume-related work
• Your motivation for studying Costume at NIDA

Outcome
You will be notified of the final outcome by email following completion of the interview process (early December).
