About the show
A World on the Brink
A dictator seizes power. Society adjusts. But for how long?
From Singaporean playwright Joel Tan, No Particular Order paints a striking portrait of life under an unnamed oppressive regime. Through a series of interconnected vignettes, we witness the lives of bureaucrats, workers, artists, and lovers navigating the slow erosion of democracy. Some resist. Some conform. All must survive.
In an era of global uncertainty and creeping authoritarianism, No Particular Order feels chillingly relevant. Urgent and unforgettable, it questions whether power or empathy will define the future.
As history repeats itself, which side will you choose?
Award winning director and actor Nigel Turner-Carroll has always put an emphasis on creating new Australian work and taking this work abroad. Some of his credits include Director and Co-Creator of The Tap Pack North American tour and most recently featured on The West End after touring Berlin, Beijing and Edinburgh Fringe festival winning The Spirit of the Fringe Award and of course multiple Australian tours.
Writer and Director of Eireborne with seasons in Zurich and Hamburg and Australia. The Box Show Australian tour which also won Critics Pick at Sydney Fringe and toured China last year. Most recently Director and Co-Creator of all female drum sensation Drummer Queens which has toured Australian capital cities.
Nigel has also Directed and Co-Written production shows, among them are Gone Too Soon, Damn Good Divas (Mo Award winner for Best Production Show, nominated Best Tribute Show at the ACE Awards.) Olympic gold medallist Matthew Mitcham’s cabaret, Twists and Turns (Winner-Best Cabaret and nominated Critics Choice Award Perth Fringe World), as well as his sequel show Under the Covers. Back to Bacharach, Starring Casey Donovan, Liza Meets Bassey and The Real Thing both for Monique Montez and Two Right Feet Featuring Tommy Egan, which travels to Edinburgh this year.
Joel Tan has written a cracker of a play. Even though it is set in a non-descript time or place, No Particular Order brings an added awareness to the place and time we live in now.
I hope within this play that covers over 40 different characters; we see the humanity within each of them. That we are reminded to see the humanity in ourselves, in the person sitting next to you right now, in the people you encounter through your day, in the people you don’t see, but are across the world that are in a less privileged place than we are in Australia.
When given all the power in the world, how would you use it? To help others or control them.
