Course Specific Application Requirements: Technical Production

This page outlines everything you need to complete your application for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Technical Production (BFATPR).

Application & Selection Process

The selection process takes place in two rounds:

Round 1: Online Application and Project Part A

Round 2: Interview and Project Part B (shortlisted applicants only)

Online Application
Complete the online application form and upload all required documents, including Project Part A.

About Technical Production Project Part A (written submission)
For this task, you will explore how you would stage a production.

Step 1: Choose a script
Select one of the following:

Rhinoceros – Eugène Ionesco
Blood Wedding – Federico García Lorca
The Drover’s Wife – Leah Purcell
The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui – Bertolt Brecht
Bran Nue Dae – Jimmy Chi

These scripts are available via libraries, bookstores, or online. If you are unable to access a script, please contact us at [email protected].

Step 2: Develop your ideas
Read your chosen script and prepare a one-page written document (PDF) outlining your ideas for staging the production.

You should consider one or more of the following production areas:

• Lighting
• Sound
• Video
• Staging

You may set the production in any venue or location or use the provided theatre plans (see resources link).

Requirements:
• Submitted as a single PDF
• Maximum file size: 80MB

Original Work Requirement
All submissions must comply with NIDA’s Original Work Requirement. This includes that all work must be your own and must not be generated or substantially developed using Artificial Intelligence. Refer to the Admissions Criteria for full details.

Upload your Project Part A and supporting documents Associated File Attachments section of your online application

Project Part A
• Select Course Specific Application Requirements in the File Category dropdown
• Upload your file

Additional required documents
You will also need to upload:
• Photo ID (select Photo ID)
• Most Recent Qualification (select Most Recent Qualification Evidence)

File Naming Requirements
All files must follow the standard naming convention to ensure correct identification.

Refer to the File Naming Guide for full details.

Format: lastname_firstname_BFATPR_2027_documenttype
Examples:
Project Part A: lastname_firstname_BFATPR_2027_projectA
Proof of Identity: lastname_firstname_BFATPR_2027_photoid

Outcome
All applications are reviewed after the closing date.
You will be notified by email of the outcome. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an interview and will be asked to expand on their Project Part A ideas for the interview.

About Project Part B (Presentation Task)
For shortlisted applicants, you will develop and present your ideas further.

You may present your ideas in any format you choose, such as:

• Images
• Sketches
• Slides
• Visual or digital presentations

Your presentation should expand on your Project Part A concept, with consideration of one of the following production elements:

• Lighting
• Sound
• Video
• Staging

You may continue to work with your chosen venue or use the provided theatre plans (see resources).

Submission of Project Part B
Before your interview, you must submit your presentation materials:
• Submit as either a single PDF or a compressed ZIP folder
• File name: lastname_firstname BFATPR_2027 projectB
• Submit via email (instructions will be provided after Round 1)

Interview

Shortlisted applicants will participate in a 30–45 minute interview, held either in-person or online via Microsoft Teams.

During the interview, you will:

• Present your Project Part B ideas to the panel
• Discuss your creative and technical decision-making
• Explore your ideas about theatre, performance, and production practice
• Discuss your motivation for studying Technical Production at NIDA

You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the course or interview process.

Outcome
You will be notified of the outcome by email following completion of the interview process (early December).
