Sev Murphy

Sev (She/Her) is a Turkish – Australian emerging Writer and Performance Maker based on unceded Gadigal Land. Her work is deeply informed by her lived experiences of living with chronic illness, growing up in regional Australia, her Turkish background and Queer identity. Sev’s passion lies in creating stories that illuminate the lives of courageous individuals living in the margins of society. With over fifteen years of experience volunteering for numerous charitable organisations, many of which involve working closely with children, Sev brings a deep commitment to fostering positive change. Her storytelling is particularly focused on crafting narratives for children and young adults, aiming to inspire agency, connection and hope among young audiences.

Sev is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts. Sev holds a Bachelor of Arts (Dean’s Scholar) with distinction from the University of Wollongong, where she completed a double major in English Literatures and French and a double minor in Theatre and Creative Writing. While simultaneously continuing with her creative endeavours, Sev aspires to pursue a PHD (Creative Arts) in the coming years to further her academic studies.

Her body of work includes several plays which have been staged across the Sydney and Illawarra regions. Sev’s monologue titled ‘Rip’ was selected as part of the Australian Theatre for Young People’s Intersection Festival, and subsequently published by Currency Press. Sev has written four short plays which were produced by Artistic Director Fiona Finley and staged at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre. Her play titled ‘The Quality of Life’ received 1st place in both the Judges’ Choice and Peoples’ Choice categories at Short & Sweet, Sydney. Sev also holds a Youth Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her service to the community.
