Sam Reucassel is a writer and comedian based on Gadigal land. Often referred to as “annoyingly positive,” Sam writes through an optimistic lens that seeks the laughs in moments where they aren’t immediately given. His excessive love for the word ‘sonder’ brings intimacy and warmth to ordinary moments, turning them into unexpectedly joyful celebrations of community and our shared humanity.
With a background in theatre, sketch comedy, and (shamefully) improvisation, Sam’s writing has a sharp, performative sensibility to it. He has honed his craft on stages across Sydney, including the Sydney Comedy Festival and packed houses at the Enmore Theatre which informs the quick-witted dialogue and immersive scripts he creates.
Sam completed a Bachelor of Arts (English) at the University of Sydney before undertaking a Masters of Dramatic Writing at NIDA, where he currently has two pieces in development: Syphus and Fizz – a buddy comedy play about a reckless 19-year-old and a terminally ill 55-year-old woman who meet in a party hostel; and Camp Chaos – a feature film about a dysfunctional group of family friends reckoning with the messy realities of adult friendships. A compulsive liar in his youth, Sam’s family is relieved he now channels his talent for bending the truth into storytelling. His grandparents, however, still wish he had studied Law
