The Effect

About the show

Connie and Tristan meet in a controlled institutional world, devoid of stimulus while participants trial a new anti-depressant during a clinical drug trial. Finding true love is complex as the effect of the drugs alters the chemical composition of their brains. Is this real love real or just a side effect?

Who can they trust inside the experiment as the effects of misinformation, manipulation and betrayal unravel around them. With the ever-present gaze of Dr. James, who will win?

The works are excerpts from Lucy Prebble’s play The Effect.

This is a reimagining of the world of The Effect. Exploring perspective, manipulation and betrayal expressed as live performance and video storytelling. The intersection of meaning created from fragmentation, juxtaposition and simultaneous storytelling is ever-present. What is reality when the composition of our brains is altered? Our perspectives are ever-shifting so, how easily can these be manipulated? All we have left is the truth.

Designing for The Effect, collaboration for the creative team was paramount; We aspired to create a world using the visual and auditory senses of the audience to make the feeling an uneasy one. The set and costume create a solitary and bounded world devoid of life and warmth, whilst the lighting, video, and soundtrack the progression of Connie and Tristan’s worsening mental and emotional state becoming more unstable, chaotic and oppressive throughout. The Effect affects the viewer as they struggle to ground themselves within a world without stability.

The sound design follows Tristan and Connie as they sift through their thoughts trying to figure out what is the influence of the drug and what is just them. But, with such extreme emotions at play, it is hard not to feel trapped in such bleak surroundings within the experiment as they try to understand what is real. My design highlights an that feeling of emotional entrapment and immerses the audience within the scene itself to further draw them into the experience and effects that Tristan and Connie are feeling.
