The Glorias, Freddie J Gibson and Loudon Sainthill Fellowships Send NIDA Alumni Internationally to Expand Creative Careers

NIDA has proudly announced the latest Fellowship recipients, Director Sarah Hadley, Actors Lincoln Elliot and Angela Sullen (The Glorias Fellowships), Lighting & Video Designer Morgan Moroney (Freddie J Gibson Fellowship), Art & Costume Designer Aislinn King (Loudon Sainthill Fellowship), supporting the next generation of creative excellence. 

As part of NIDA’s commitment to providing global career pathways for its graduates, The Freddie J Gibson, The Glorias and The Loudon Sainthill Fellowships honour the legacy of visionary artists and advocates by supporting NIDA alumni to expand their practice and connect with leading international networks. 

The Glorias Fellowships provides professional actors and directors career development through overseas travel. Established by the Gloria Payten Foundation and the Gloria Dawn Foundation, representing the estate of renowned theatrical agent Gloria Payten, the Fellowships honour Payten’s vision to commemorate Gloria Dawn, one of Australia’s most celebrated actresses.  

The Glorias Fellowships recipients are Actors Angela Sullen, Lincoln Elliott and Director Sarah Hadley.  

Actor Angela Sullen (Acting, 2016) will attend the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, to research her new show and engage with industry. She will also connect with the Mawa Theatre Company (UK’s first all-black, all-female Shakespeare company), research The Globe Theatre in London and take professional development sessions with voice coach Barbara Houseman. 

Musical Theatre Performer Lincoln Elliott (Diploma Musical Theatre 2017) will attend the UK Musical Theatre Conference and take an observer placement with the Musical Theatre Network in the UK. He will network and attend musical performances at the Edinburgh Festival and attend the National Alliance for Musical Theatre Conference and Festival along with on and off-Broadway productions in New York. 

Director Sarah Hadley (Directing, 2018) will travel to The Netherlands, UK and Germany to attend international film festivals (Créteil, Europe by Europe, LIFF), take up a formal directing residency at the Directors Village in Maastricht, attend the Theatertreffen Theatre Festival in Berlin and take professional meetings with distinguished artists including Ari Wegner ACS ASC, Finn Caldwell and Taio Lawson. 

The Freddie J Gibson bequest opened its Fellowship criteria to all Bachelor or Master of Fine Arts alumni with at least three years of professional experience, to reflect the diverse career paths of NIDA graduates. The Fellowship offers career development through travel funding, international industry connections and new production development. 

The Freddie J Gibson Fellowship recipient, Lighting & Video Designer Morgan Moroney (Technical Theatre and Stage Management, 2021) will travel to London to assist Lighting Designer Nick Schlieper on the West End production of Dracula, directed by Kip Willams (Directing ,2009) and starring Cynthia Erivo (Wicked). Having worked on the original Sydney production as Associate Lighting Designer, the Fellowship will provide Morgan with travel funding to the UK to take up this exceptional career opportunity. 

Established in memory of the renowned stage and costume designer Loudon Sainthill, the Fellowship supports designers with at least two years of professional experience who are ready to broaden their artistic perspective through international engagement.  

The Loudon Sainthill Fellowship was awarded to Art & Costume Designer Aislinn King (Design for Performance, 2018 & Masters of Design for Performance, 2020) who will travel to Berlin to observe innovative new performance modes and conceptual premises at the Theatertreffen Theatre Festival, Staatsballett principal ballet company, Pina Bausch Foundation dance company and attend Berlin Design Week design events and workshops to meet and network with innovative international designers and conduct practice-based research.
