April Rose Desalegn is an African Australian writer, actor and director from Sydney, Australia. April’s writing, like herself, is curious; probing boldly into unsolvable human problems. She enjoys dissecting taboo topics and unveiling their inner workings for all to see, raising interesting questions for audiences to discuss with their loved ones long after they have left the theatre. She also likes to laugh. As a second-generation immigrant from Ethiopia, April intimately understands how miscommunication and misfortune can be as hilarious as it is heartbreaking, and injects this comedy into all of her stories.
April has completed a Bachelor of Laws and Social Political Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney, and is currently completing a Master of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing at NIDA. At this nascent point in her career, April has gained a Writing Attachment with renowned studio Village Roadshow, where she developed the series Sweat under novelist-screenwriter Eleanor Kirk, soon going on to contribute to the development No Pink Dicks by Award winning playwright Moreblessing Maturure. April has a background as an Actor and comedic performer, with current representation by Morrissey Management. She also worked as Creative Coordinator under Finch Production Company, granting her invaluable insight into the commercial storytelling world.
