The Way of the World
Date/Time: 01 Nov 2018 -07 Nov 2018 7:45pm - 7:45pm
By William Congreve
Directed by John Bashford
'...and wherefore did I marry, but to make lawful prize of a rich widow's wealth'
Lady Wishfort has a sprawling family each with their own concerns. There’s a fortune at stake and reputations to be ruined or preserved. In this jostling world, Congreve conjures up a witty, sharply satirical game as lovers old and new manoeuvre for advantage, or survival in a changing world.
Congreve’s comedy from 1700, now set in the 1950s, explores the collision between two worlds; an older world with its presumptions about marriage, money, power and influence is countered by a newer world where feeling and consideration come to the fore before a marriage is agreed.
