Each year, NIDA welcomes schools from around the world to experience expert performing arts education and training through our Schools Customised Program. Many of these schools return to work with us year-after-year and we have the privilege of forging lasting relationships.
This year we had the pleasure of welcoming back School of the Arts Singapore (SOTA), Singapore’s first national pre-tertiary specialised arts school with a six-year integrated arts and academic curriculum for young people aged 13-18 years old. The school seeks to offer development pathways for those who have an interest and show early talent in the arts.
Following the success of a workshop last year, SOTA returned to NIDA Open this year to provide a new group of students with a unique customised learning experience focusing on voice technique in acting.
Teacher, Sazali Abu Othman explains that SOTA’s vision is to provide a learning environment for students where both artistic and academic potential can be realised, so felt it important to have her students visit NIDA too. “We heard that NIDA is one of the best performing arts schools in Australia so we thought it would be good exposure for another group of our students.”
In the lead up to the workshop, NIDA Open worked with SOTA to design a two-day course to satisfy their learning objectives – challenge the students’ approach to applying voice technique to scene work.NIDA tutor, Rebecca Johnston observed what a pleasure the students were to work with, “What stood out most was how bold and brave they were during group devised improvisation and during their scene work – both of which they learnt in an extremely short period of time.”
If your school is looking for an opportunity to experience all that NIDA has to offer, find out more about our customised workshops for schools.
