NIDA is proud to partner with NETFLIX to present the 5-day ‘Hair and Make-Up for Screen’ short course through NIDA Open, commencing in January 2025, which will provide aspiring hair and make-up artists with valuable insight into the role of hair and make-up artists working in the screen industry.
Course participants will delve into the crucial role of hair and make-up artists who help bring authentic on-screen characters to life. They will explore a variety of styling and application techniques, as well as the importance of maintaining continuity throughout production.
The course also offers hands-on opportunities to experiment with special effects, enhancing dramatic impact, and provides insights into potential career paths within this exciting industry.
In partnership with NIDA, NETFLIX will grant 5 fully funded places in the course exclusively for First Nations people and People of Colour, with travel and accommodation support provided for applicants who live outside of Sydney. This will provide a unique opportunity to learn from industry professionals at NIDA’s internationally recognised Sydney campus in Kensington.
This partnership and course initiative was developed to reflect the growth of film and TV production in Australia, primarily driven by streaming services, and the vital importance that industry growth reflects Australia’s diversity in all crew roles, as well as on screen.
Travis Cardona (Acting, 2008), NIDA’s Director of First Nations & Outreach said; ‘Behind-the-scenes roles, like those in the make-up department, are crucial to storytelling in both film and theatre. There is a pressing need in the industry to encourage more people from First Nations and other POC communities to pursue careers in this field. Their expertise and lived experience are essential in authentically representing the rich diversity of skin tones, hair textures, and cultural identities we see on screens and stages.’
Applications for the NETFLIX placements in the course are now open.
