NIDA and triple j Unearthed

For well over a decade, NIDA has proudly partnered with national radio station triple j, to direct and design music videos for up-and-coming Australian music artists as part of the national Unearthed competition.

Triple j radio launched its regional Unearthed competition in 1995, asking independent musicians to send in their demos for a chance to have their song played on national radio. Over the years, several now-notable Australian artists had been discovered through the initiative, including Missy Higgins (2001), Killing Heidi (1996) and Grinspoon, the first winners in 1995 and has led to the rise of hundreds of more artists being discovered through the unearthed program including Flume, Ball Park Music, Vance Joy and Gang of Youths.

This year NIDA Master of Fine Arts Directing students worked closely with third year Bachelor of Fine Arts Design students to develop seven original music videos which then play across the triple j website and social network and screen on ABC TV's rage from  2 September 2023.

Dr Benjamin Schostakowski NIDA’s Head of Directing said 'Through this long-standing partnership, we have established a powerful platform for emerging artists to showcase their talents and collaborate with other industry professionals. These music video clips are a testament to the bright and promising future of the Australian live music and entertainment industries.'

Tommy Faith Executive Producer of Unearthed said 'Every year I think we’re going to start seeing these young NIDA directors and designers recycling ideas and every year I’m blown away again by the creativity and freshness of what they put together. Executed on virtually no budget, these music videos are immaculate, and we’re stoked to be able to offer young musical artists the privilege of working with such exceptional creatives. Another year, another set of NIDA music videos blowing our mind!'

This year NIDA students are proud to create unique and fresh music videos with some of Australia’s most exciting emerging musicians including Bumbag  with Director Temuulan Jargalsaikhan and Production Designer Cosette Mangas, DICE with Director Kurtis Laing and Production Designer Madaleine Cooper, Isaac Puerile with Director Fernando De Miguel Fuertes and Production Designer Taylah Miller, Oshua with Director Rebecca McNamee and Production Designer Paris Burrows, Romaine with Director Rosa Campagnaro and Production Designer James Stibilj, Peach Fur with Director Mehhma Malhi and Production Designer Rebecca Howarth, and Angela Rose with Director Joanna Bradley and Production Designer Ruby Jenkins.
