NIDA Independent: breaking new ground

Emerging creators from stage and screen could have the chance to see their work brought to life, thanks to support from NIDA Independent. This innovative program supports artists and companies to develop new works by providing two rare but essential commodities – time and space.

Emerging creators from stage and screen could have the chance to see their work brought to life, thanks to support from NIDA Independent.

This innovative program supports artists and companies to develop new works by providing two rare but essential commodities – time and space.

Johanna Mulholland from NIDA’s Parade Theatres says the program is part of NIDA’s commitment to encouraging innovation in Australia’s cultural sector.

“This is a great opportunity for writers, directors and creators working across theatre, television and film to explore new ideas and develop new works.”

The program offers two opportunities for artists and companies:

Production Program

– offers access to the Parade Studio to present a professional performance of a work and can include plays, musicals, cabaret, physical theatre, mini-festivals or self-devised pieces.

Creative Development Residency

– offers access to the Parade Studio to develop a new idea, work, script or performance concept and the opportunity to be mentored by an industry professional.

Johanna Mulholland says many projects that begin life as a Creative Development Residency are later produced as a NIDA Independent Production or through other industry platforms.

“A creative residency is a great opportunity to develop a script, devise new work or explore new practices and theatre forms.”

Night Parrots Productions, headed up by Artistic Director Katy Alexander, undertook a Creative Development Residency in 2012 and 2013, developing incredible new work which later was staged as part of VIVID Sydney.

Applications to NIDA Independent are open to all creators across Australia and are not restricted to NIDA alumni.

The successful applicants for 2014 will be announced on 10 February.
