Credit for Previous Study and Experience

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning  

If you’ve received an offer to study at NIDA, you may be eligible to apply for credit towards your course based on previous study, training or relevant professional experience. 

NIDA assesses each application individually under its Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

How to apply 

1. Complete the application form 

Identify the NIDA subject or unit for which you are seeking credit and tell us about your previous study, training or experience. 

2. Provide supporting documents 

Attach evidence that demonstrates your previous learning. 

3. Receive your outcome 

NIDA will assess your application and send you a written outcome. We may contact you if further information or assessment is required. 

What documents should I provide? 

Previous study or training:

  • a certified academic transcript, qualification or statement of attainment 
  • the relevant subject, unit or course outline. 

Professional or other experience 

Relevant documents may include: 

  • a CV or résumé
  • an employer or professional reference 
  • a position description or work statement 
  • a portfolio, work samples, reports, recordings or publications 
  • evidence of professional development or training. 

Your documents should show what you completed, when and where it took place, and your individual role or contribution (if applicable). 

  • A maximum of 50% of your course units may be granted as credit.
  • Learning completed more than 10 years before you apply will not be credited.
  • Undergraduate subjects cannot be credited towards a Master by coursework degree.
  • Credit is specific to the NIDA course for which it is approved.
  • Credit will not be granted if it would prevent you from meeting the collaborative or industry-based requirements of your course.
  • Learning completed more than 10 years before you apply will not be credited.
  • You must continue to attend and participate in all classes, even if Credit Transfer or RPL is granted.
  • You may be excused from some assessment activities.
  • Course fees remain payable where RPL is granted.

Approved credit may reduce the duration of your course.

If your course duration changes, NIDA will issue a new Confirmation of Enrolment showing the revised duration. This may affect your student visa.

Speak with the Student Hub before applying if you need advice about possible implications for your enrolment or visa.

You will receive a written outcome advising whether:

  • credit has been granted
  • further information or assessment is required
  • credit has not been granted.

If credit is not granted, you can appeal the decision through NIDA’s Academic Complaints and Appeals process.
