Rhys is a First Nations fulla. Born in Tasmania, he was raised on a sheep farm, Rhys grew up mastering both wool and skate parks – ultimately reaching a professional level in skateboarding. When he wasn’t on his board, he was catching waves, becoming a skilled surfer as well.
Upon completing his studies, Rhys hopped on his motorbike and blazed into Sydney, swapping his board for ballet shoes. Training in contemporary dance at Ev and Bow, he soon performed with Opera Australia in Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, Faust and AIDA at the Sydney Opera House.
Since commencing at NIDA, he has been dramatically sharpening his acting skills. Whether he’s dancing, acting, skateboarding, or surfing, Rhys Johnson is living proof that you can take the boy out of Tasmania, but you can’t take Tasmania out of the boy!
