Taikoz is honoured to collaborate with international guest artist Shogo Yoshii in a program that highlights his skills as composer and performer of taiko, the bamboo shinobue flute and the stringed kokyū.

For a decade, Shogo performed in the world’s finest theatres as a featured artist of the renowned KODO ensemble. Since branching out as a solo artist, he joined the musical ensemble of Babel choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet, which toured the world, including a stunning season in Sydney. Shogo followed this project by becoming music director and performer in Arte y Solera’s flamenco piece Dojoji. More recently, Shogo toured internationally with Larbi Cherkaoui’s dance production Fractus V.

From the hushed tones of Shogo’s bamboo flute to the drama of the entire ensemble in full flight, sparks will fly when Shogo meets Taikoz.

Recognised internationally as ground breakers in contemporary taiko performance, Taikoz continues to push boundaries in new Australian music. Led by percussionist-taikoist-komponist Ian Cleworth, LION-DOGS presents the ensemble in all its varied brilliance.

Featuring Ian’s new dramatic extended work Lion-Dogs, the program also presents dynamo performer Ryuji Hamada in a newly commissioned solo work by YUNYU for electronic taiko, movement and sound design. Stone Lions Are Born In Storms exploits Ryuji’s talents as brilliant drummer and dynamic mover.

The program will also see the premiere of Ian’s arrangement of music by world-renowned New York composer-performer Kaoru Watanabe. A suite of three varied works by Kaoru features the Taikoz ensemble with saxophone legend SANDY EVANS.

As a Prelude to LION-DOGS, we are proud to present the debut performance of the ATA ENSEMBLE – a new group comprising top players drawn from the Australian Taiko Academy.
