Julian Starr

Julian Starr

At the age of 16, Julian left school to become a retail manager and trainer for a large supermarket chain. This led him to work extensively throughout Australia, including in Western Australia, Queensland, Northern Territory and Tasmania. As his passion and interests lay with the arts, Julian then took a leap of faith – leaving the world of retail to study at NIDA.

In his first year, he was exposed to the holistic aspects of back stage theatre. This led to a passion for sound and sound systems. At NIDA, Julian has focused his training and exploration of his artistic craft in sound design.

In 2016, he was awarded the Peter Baynes Memorial Scholarship, which enabled him to travel to the United Kingdom to work as assistant Sound Designer to highly renowned professional Sound Designers at the Royal National Theatre London, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Mel Brookʼs Musical Young Frankenstein on the West End.

Julian is now focusing on becoming an Australian and international Sound Designer in musical theatre, plays, installations and large-scale live events. Julian is also a proud member of the Association of Sound Designers.
