Joanna has always been interested in creating worlds within a world. Prior to starting the Properties course at NIDA she completed a Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) at Queensland University of Technology in 2009 and was particularly interested in nightclub, retail, event, set and theme park design. This interest saw her move to California in 2010 where she gained work at an architecture firm, interned at City Lights Theatre Company on productions of Distracted, Aphrodisiac, Compleat Female Stage Beauty and Anything Goes at Cabrillo Stage and studied scenic art and design at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz.
Her interest in making weird and wonderful objects grew from watching Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Sweeney Todd. She enjoys the challenge of bringing objects from concept through to realisation and the challenges that every prop provides. She worked as a Props Labourer on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales at the start of 2015.
Since being at NIDA Joanna has been particularly interested in puppetry, completing a hand carved wooden marionette for her masterwork project. She will be heading to New York in January to undertake industry placement at Puppet Heap.
