Michael Hili


Before undertaking study at NIDA, Michael worked with Melbourne photographer Jes Stephens and director Mathew Rich to produce the EXILE series and short films, a study into gender equality.

Michael’s set and costume design credits at NIDA include In The Blood, directed by Dominic Mercer, costume design for Wolf in the River, written and directed by American playwright Adam Rapp, and Emma Rice’s adaptation of The Red Shoes for which he created the set and costume design with director Elsie Edgerton-Till. Michael has also worked as a costume designer on the hybrid documentary Jack Mundy Blues (AFTRS), as well as production and costume designer for the music video for Brisbane band Little Odessa for the track My Girl (triple j Unearthed).

As an illustrator and animator, Michael wrote and drew the theatrical storybook Wild Animals Don’t Snore (2014) bringing together projected storybook illustrations performed with live action and music. Michael contributed as an animator to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games arts program (Perch Carnival) and worked as costume illustrator on Michael Scott-Mitchell’s design for Storm Boy (Barking Gecko/Sydney Theatre Company).

Currently, Michael is working as associate designer with Gabriela Tylesova on the Barking Gecko/Opera Australia adaptation of the Shaun Tan/John Marsden picture book The Rabbits.
