First Nations Lecturer - NIDA Master of Fine Arts (Cultural Leadership)

BACKGROUND

Established in 2016, NIDA’s MFA in Cultural Leadership challenges students to question and debate the role of the cultural sector in our society and their place within it.  It is designed specifically for those who already have active roles in the cultural sector who aspire to facilitate resilient, new leadership models and practices.

Through part-time online learning and face-to-face intensives at NIDA in Sydney, students are encouraged to exchange and collaborate in innovative approaches to creative and professional practice. Topics covered include governance, cultural policy, new leadership modelling, communication, advocacy, cultural transformation, sustainability, and research generated through practice.  Throughout the course students develop into future-focused arts leaders.

Our graduates are actively engaged in a wide range of roles including arts festivals, performing arts companies, local government, arts funding and policy advisory bodies, libraries, performing arts venues, independent artists and producers, museums and galleries, creative industries and cultural service organisations.  To date, the Course has had four First Nations students (two who have graduated and two current students).

The course is delivered by Lecturers who are widely experienced cultural leaders working in the arts and cultural sector, as well as by senior NIDA academics.

POSITION PURPOSE

Having recently completed a course review, there is an important opportunity to build a deeper engagement with First Nations and culturally-diverse research, knowledges and practices in all Cultural Leadership subjects.

The new position of First Nations Lecturer with the MFA Cultural Leadership course will teach First Nations knowledge and practice in each subject, engage in subject design and develop First Nations course materials and resources.   This position will play a leading role in ensuring that the delivery of First Nations content is premised on culturally aware and culturally competent approaches and behaviours.

The position will work under the broad direction from the Course Leader Cultural Leadership and in consultation with other Course lecturers.

Working collaboratively, the Cultural Leadership team will reflect NIDA’s commitment to ensuring that First Nations voices, stories and experiences are deeply and appropriately represented in all aspects of learning and teaching.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The First Nations Lecturer will be required to:

  • Teach at the postgraduate level in face-to-face, blended and online modes in the areas of First Nations knowledge and practice in each subject.
  • Engage in subject design and the development of course materials by reviewing and updating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research, resources, guest speakers, panellists and other teaching materials for each subject.
  • Provide specialist advice on inclusion of First Nations perspectives, protocols, content, histories and knowledges in the context of the Cultural Leadership course.
  • Collaborate with the Course Leader to design, create and support the implementation of culturally inclusive good practice models of learning and teaching.
  • Contribute to NIDA’s Indigenous Strategy Working Group and NIDA’s Inclusion Strategy.

ABOUT THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT/SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants should have:

  • a wide network of relationships within the First Nations and broader arts and cultural sectors, including key industry, professional and academic individuals and institutions;
  • strong communication, organisational and presentation skills;
  • excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively to engage students, teaching staff and guest speakers;
  • demonstrated experience with the effective development and implementation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education programs or related arts and cultural programs;
  • capacity to moderate on-line forums and other online engagements, and supporting participants to learn collaboratively in this context;
  • experience in teaching and the facilitation of learning in a variety of settings; and
  • a post graduate qualification in a relevant discipline recognised in Australia, or equivalent professional experience.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Develop, maintain and deliver course work and lead classes focussed on research and teaching in the area of First Nations knowledge and practice to the MFA (Cultural Leadership) students.
  • Operate effectively and engage successfully with the online learning and teaching processes that are associated with the teaching of the Cultural Leadership course.
  • Support the engagement and participation of First Nations Cultural Leadership students and evaluate and assess students’ work progress in accordance with NIDA’s assessment principles and procedures, and student regulations.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of course curriculum and assessment procedures.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of First Nations global issues and industry developments to ensure the MFA (Cultural Leadership) program has currency and relevance.
  • Build and maintain national and international networks in the cultural sector of benefit to MFA Cultural Leadership student cohorts.
  • Support the development of recruitment strategies for potential First Nations students for the Cultural Leadership course.

TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT

Applications are only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.  The filling of this position is intended to constitute an affirmative measure under subsection 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.

The engagement will commence as soon as possible and cover the period through to 31 December 2021 in the first instance, with the possibility for extension.

The employment agreement is based on the equivalent of one day per week @ $112,000 per annum, pro-rata.  However the pattern of work will vary to meet the demands of the course. The course is structured to enable students to participate on-campus through four intensives (which last four or five days each and include weekends) each year, during these periods the role will be required full-time. The pattern of additional work will be established in the planning process for the commencement of the academic year.
