ABOUT COSTUMERealise the creations you see in your mind’s eye – and live your dream. Master the highly specialised discipline of costume making and management with a Bachelor of Dramatic Art from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), the premier performing arts education and training institution. As a graduate of this course you’ll have the knowledge and skill to become a sought-after costume professional in theatre, film, television or events, ready to follow in the footsteps of NIDA’s successful alumni and electrify audiences all over the world with your costumes. Working with industry experts, you’ll develop a sophisticated understanding of the art, history and theory of costume making, giving you a historical and social context to guide your inspiration, whatever the production. You’ll also practise an artillery of techniques, including millinery making, tailoring, draping, leatherwork and underpinning. You’ll learn how to choose fabric with an eye to functionality and budget, create the perfect fit and work fast and accurately. Testing what you’ve learned in different media, you’ll work on your own creations and launch them on the stage in NIDA productions. Working with designers on a collaborative project, you’ll also gain experience in realising your ideas coherently as part of a production team. In your final year, you’ll deepen your understanding of your craft in a placement to the arts and entertainment industry that will help you add real-life contacts and experience to your highly regarded qualification from NIDA. EXPLORE COSTUMEThe core of this course is costume construction and realisation and trains students in techniques and applies both theoretical and practical knowledge for this highly specialised industry.
