WHY SHAKESPEARE?

NIDA has a uniquely strong Play Production program at the core of its training in all courses which is the envy of many international theatre schools.  The Shakespeare season in the NIDA Play Production program is a central point in the actors’ second year of training.  Moreover, the Shakespeare canon provides exceptional challenges for all our young artists in training.  For the actors, the opportunity to taste the powerful language of Shakespeare awakens a response to language, literature and the craft of acting in the most challenging of ways, extending the actor beyond the ‘norms’ of Realism.  Equally challenging for designers and technical artists, Shakespearian stagecraft must be re-interpreted for contemporary performance spaces and audiences.

This year NIDA is presenting two of the less performed works, Measure for Measure and Pericles, and one perennial favourite, however rare in Australia, Othello.  The full year of Acting 2 is divided into three small-cast productions, maximising opportunities for actors, encouraging innovative solutions and freeing the gendering of roles.  The productions are designed, constructed and managed by this year’s graduating students in Design, Production, Production Crafts (Props and Costumes) and Set Construction.  Three Shakespeares allows more students from all courses to respond imaginatively and artistically to the challenges of some of the world’s greatest and often most difficult plays.
