MIKE WALSH FELLOWSHIPS

Through the generosity of Mike Walsh, the Mike Walsh Fellowships have been established to assist young artists who have the potential to make a significant contribution to the Australian arts and entertainment industry.

The Mike Walsh Fellowships are open to practitioners from all NIDA courses who graduated not more than ten years ago.

The Fellowships enable recipients to travel abroad to obtain a wider knowledge of theatre, film or television, such as through a formal course of study or by a self-devised program which, for example, may include private instruction, observation, secondment, meetings with relevant people or an association with an international company.

It is expected successful applicants will return to Australia and take up their careers with new knowledge, improved skills and richer imaginations.

The 2009 Fellowships were awarded to Pearl Tan, Dorje Swallow, Tom Campbell, Brad Clark and Alexandra Sommer, Anna Houston, Jamie Irvine and Micka Agosta.

About Mike Walsh

For many years, Mike Walsh has been a household name across Australia. Firstly as a disc jockey on radio - he compered The Rolling Stones and Beach Boys shows, amongst others, at that time and then pioneered talk-back radio on 2SM. Then, after several television shows, he launched The Mike Walsh Show which was watched by 5 million viewers weekly on 130 stations nationally for both the Ten and Nine networks in the 70s and 80s.

The Mike Walsh Show won 24 Logies, 7 Sammys, Television Society Awards and the U.N. Media Peace Prize and Mike Walsh was awarded an O.B.E. for his services to the performing arts.

Today, Mike heads an expanding entertainment business. He is a highly successful international theatrical entrepreneur, producing plays and musicals in Australia and abroad.

Mike's theatres are The Hayden Orpheum, which Mike bought in 1986 and restored and rebuilt to its former glory. It now has six Art Deco cinemas. In June, 2000, Mike bought Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne, which he closed down for almost two years for extensive modernisation, especially backstage, and re-opened in 2002 as Australia's premier Lyric Theatre.

Mike is now based in London and divides his time between the U.K., Sydney and Melbourne.

Mike Walsh has always had an interest in the future of the Australian entertainment industry and in 1995 he endorsed these Fellowships to the amount of $30,000 annually to assist young Australians to maximise their talents.
