LOUDON SAINTHILL

The Loudon Sainthill Memorial Scholarship Trust offers a travelling scholarship of up to $12,000 to emerging Australian theatre designers. It is not currently offered every year.

The Loudon Sainthill Memorial Travelling Scholarship is administered on behalf of the Trustees by NIDA.

Applicants should be emerging professionals working in theatre design. Applicants must have designed for at least three productions for a professional company.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

Loudon Sainthill was one of the most imaginative designers in the theatre of his time.

He was born in Tasmania in 1919. After serving in the Royal Australian Nacy during World War II, he left Australia to pursue a career in England as a theatre designer.

Between 1951 and 1958 Loudon Sainthill designed more than 40 productions for the Old Vic, the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-on-Avon, the Royal Court, Covent Garden and Sadler's Wells as well as West End productions for Tennents and Harold Fielding.

When he died in London in 1969 at the age of fifty, his reputation was international and derived from more than fifty productions of theatre, opera, ballet, revue, pantomimes and musicals.

In 1970, Harry Tatlock Miller established in London the Loudon Sainthill Memorial Scholarship Trust in memory of Loudon Sainthill. The Trust endows a travelling scholarship for a young Australian theatre designer.

In 1987, Harry Tatlock Miller asked NIDA to administer the Loudon Sainthill Memorial Scholarship in Australia.

Previous Loudon Sainthill Travelling Scholarship winners include Stephen Curtis, Catherine Martin, Angus Strathie and Dale Ferguson.
