EVENT MANAGEmentThis is an intensive, one-year part-time course. Applications for 2009 are now open.
The course covers the planning, production and management of events on any scale from outdoor spectaculars and ceremonial public events through corporate or community celebrations to weddings and dance parties.
Learn about the role of an Event Manager from a practical perspective, with a strong focus on the project management of events and developing creative and production skills. You will develop skills in event management through five core subjects, which gradually build in complexity over four terms. By the final term you will undertake a practical event management project.
The core subjects are:
CREATIVITY
You will learn how to interpret (or prepare) an event brief and develop an event concept through classes and practical exercises. The subject will include developing and presenting a creative proposal and working with members of a creative team to design a unique event that exceeds the client's expectations. You will learn how to take a creative approach to all stages of event production.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Events are projects and so the course follows the project management model. Discover the project management process, learn how to set goals and objectives from the event concept and design, and then plan, schedule, implement, monitor and review and deliver successful events.
PRODUCTION
This subject will develop practical skills in stagecraft, technical production, operations, dealing with suppliers and venues and all aspects of the production of events. You will also have the opportunity to go further into production areas such as lighting, audio, vision, staging, costumes and sets. An understanding of production areas is a key feature of the NIDA Event Management course.
BUSINESS
Over the year you will learn the core skills needed to contribute to the operation of an event business. You will also cover the key financial, legal and administrative issues that must be dealt with in all events. This subject also includes Human Resource management, risk management and developing/incorporating your event plan into business strategy.
MARKETING
You will develop skills in marketing and promoting events and learn how to use events as part of a successful marketing strategy. This subject will also deal with communication: developing a communication strategy, using events as part of a communication plan, public relations, publicity and sponsorship.
SPECIALIST AREAS
In addition to the comprehensive training provided in the first four core subjects, we will deal in detail with certain specialist areas such as festivals, outdoor events, crowd management, security, IT (including an introduction to CAD and business software), risk management, OH&S, government liaison and presenting hallmark events.
Two projects are included during the course to give you practical experience in working on events. These will be approximately one week full-time. Dates for these projects will be discussed and finalised with the group.
