London 1602: the South Bank, the world of playhouses, Shakespeare and Jonson, brothels, markets, bear baiting and The Clink.
By day the Clink is a maximum security prison where Her Majesty Elizabeth I henchmen appear to be in control, but at nightfall the Clink explodes into riotous corruption. Cross dressers rub shoulders with doomsday beggars, clergy dally with twopenny whores, lords and ladies take advantage of the licentious anonymity of the largest brothel and casino in the city of London.
Stephen Jeffreys' play was written in 1990. It points clearly to our own age. Art requires sponsorship but sponsors require 'safe' art. Do comedy and political correctness mix?
