Renowned Japanese director and author, Yoji Sakate, will work with third year NIDA students and present performances of his acclaimed play (Yaneura) The Attic (English translation by Leon Ingulsrud and Keiko Tsuneda).
Yaneura (The Attic) is set in Japan in the near future. This darkly comic collection of many seemingly disparate episodes takes an incisive look at the social issue which the Japanese called hikikomori (withdrawn) This refers to people whose obsessions or disconnections from society lead them to cocoon themselves in their rooms and refuse contact with the outside world. This phenomenon is a growing trend in other countries.
Innovative in form and relevant in content, all the scenes are surprisingly performed in a claustrophobic 4-metre cube, evoking a small attic, or yaneura. Considered one of this award-winning playwright's best works, The Attic is haunting and deeply moving whilst always remaining engaging and theatrical.
