SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

Each year, over 1,700 hopeful applicants vie for 70 coveted places at NIDA.

It’s a tough audition process, and the three-year degree course is even tougher - daily class work, rehearsals, assignments, along with performances at night and over weekends, make it impossible for students to work and finance themselves.  Even during breaks, many students are on secondment to theatre companies and venues.

NIDA students come from all over Australia (with limited spots for overseas students) and are from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds.  Sydney is a high-cost environment, and just making ends meet can put a great deal of additional strain on the students.  Many students have no family support or are ineligible for other forms of financial assistance.  Some students come from very remote areas of Australia and would have no hope of attending NIDA if it were not for the Scholarship Program.

Through the NIDA Foundation Trust, scholarships are offered to those who are in need of financial support, and over the years, these scholarships have enabled hundreds of students to pursue their dreams.

In 2007, for the first time, the NIDA Foundation Scholarship Program will be offering scholarships to young people, who otherwise would be denied the opportunity, to attend the NIDA Open Program.  This will include scholarships for indigenous young people, young people from severely disadvantaged families, and people with intellectual or physical disabilities.

The Open Program tours nationally, including several regional and remote areas of Australia.  Through drama, this program provides the chance to develop life-enhancing skills in a non-threatening and fun environment.  This can be enormously beneficial to all people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.  To ensure that this opportunity is available to those who may need it most is a worthy extension of the NIDA Foundation’s Scholarship Program.

“Support for NIDA is support for youth, education, the arts and creative excellence”
Greg Coote, Producer, Los Angeles

NIDA is committed to enabling students from all walks of life access to the enriching world of the dramatic arts and relies on the generosity of its scholarship supporters to ensure that we can fulfil this charter.
