NIDA SUPPORTERS NEWS Dawn O'Donnell's Ongoing Gift To NIDA
The Late Dawn O’Donnell established a scholarship fund for Technical and Production students in 2002, expressing her desire to fund the students who were integral to any production, but who possibly didn’t receive as much profile. “She particularly loved receiving correspondence from the students who benefited from her scholarship donations – she was interested in their stories,” said Sheena Duncan, Head of Philanthropy & Events.
O’ Donnell, who died in 2007, was determined that this scholarship fund continue in perpetuity, and left close to $2 million in cash and valuable artworks to be sold, to establish the Dawn O’Donnell Bequest & Scholarships. The artworks, sold through Richard Martin Art, included significant pieces by Fred Williams, Justin O’Brien, Picasso, Arthur Boyd, Lloyd Rees, Donald Friend, amongst others.
The interest earned from the Bequest will fund a number of scholarships for Technical & Production students, and provide assistance for young women Directors in their developing careers. Happily coinciding with this generous Bequest, arrived an outstanding opportunity for three of NIDA’s women Graduates Directors (2009) to take their plays to the important Adelaide Fringe Festival in early 2010. It is an honour to be invited to be part of this Festival (the second largest Fringe Festival in the world) and it would have been impossible without the funding from the
Andrew Banks, Chairman of the NIDA Foundation Trust said, “This Bequest is the largest in NIDA’s history, and demonstrates the power and importance of legacy giving to the ongoing vitality of any organisation. A Bequest can provide artistic and developmental opportunities that elevate the status of an organisation from high-quality to world-class, and we all benefit from the richness that this brings to our lives.”
