STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM

NIDA offers access to its Bachelor of Dramatic Art (Acting) course to university students from outside Australia on the Study Abroad program. Access to other Bachelor of Dramatic Art courses is also potentially available.

Enrolment is processed through the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Study Abroad Program. Study Abroad students will join NIDA's full time courses for one semester to develop their existing knowledge and to gain new skills.

Credits from NIDA are not formally registered on a NIDA transcript for Study Abroad students. Students, who wish to obtain credits in Performance Theatre for their study at NIDA, need to seek prior approval from their home institution.

HOW TO APPLY

Step 2. Select the period you wish to attend NIDA

In 2010, NIDA will have a four term academic year.
Each term will alternatively have an emphasis on either:

Theory (teaching, skills development, lectures etc) OR
Production (application of skills in productions, performance, projects etc)

For Study Abroad purposes, NIDA will be offering a choice of two semesters, made up of two terms each:

Semester 1                1 February to 28 June
Term 1                        1 Feb - 1 Apr (skills based term)
Term 2                        19 Apr - 2 July (production based term)

Semester 2               19 July to 5 November
Term 3                        19 July - 27 Aug (skills based term)
Term 4                        6 Sept - 5 Nov (production based term)

NIDA willl also offer Term 2 separately:
Term 2                       19 April to 2 July

The second term is the longest in the year and, while the focus is largely production based, it includes some skills based components. It is therefore an option for Study Abroad students

Step 3.  Provide a Show Reel and Head Shot with your application

Your show reel must provide the following:

a) A brief introduction of yourself and why you would like to study at NIDA

b) Three monologues:
- At least one must be from a Shakespeare play
- Choose contrasting pieces, to show different aspects of your abilities
- They should be approximately two minutes each
- Do not choose poems
- Do not prepare self-devised of self-written pieces

If you would like to select from the NIDA Suggested Monologues Pieces, please click on the appropriate pdf file below:

STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS IN 2009

Peter Moses

"Studying at NIDA was the perfect opportunity to for me to continue my education in a conservatory program, while getting to experience an incredibly different part of the world.  I was able to grow as an actor, not only from the experiences I had in the classroom, but more importantly through the new people I got to work with, as well as the culture I was submersed in.  This semester abroad allowed me to discover a new sense of self as a professional and as a person.  The friendships I've forged here will last a lifetime.  Both NIDA and Australia itself are two things that will remain dear to me for the rest of my life".

HEATHER MAY
Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, USA
Acting 1, Term 3

"Studying at NIDA for the semester was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. From day one I was treated just like any other member of the school. It is this that makes studying at NIDA as a visiting student so unique: you become part of the NIDA family. Every class you take and every project you work on follows the same pattern as the NIDA students because you are their fellow classmate. As NIDA accepts so few study abroad students, it offers a unique immersion experience. Teachers engage in your progress with care and attention which equals that shown to the Australian students".

"NIDA's reputation as the nurturer of some of the most successful film and theatrical talents working in the industry today is well deserved. I found the approach to training at NIDA eclectic, drawing on many different disciplines and techniques in a whirlwind taster session of what lies behind great acting. The ethos enforced along each step of the way, to encourage student to take their craft, makes NIDA a rigorous but autonmous learning environment. I found in my classmates to be exciting developing artists whom I am now lucky to be able to call 'friend'. Best of all, because NIDA offers a host of courses outside of acting, being an acting student at NIDA gave me the chance to work alongside young designers, properties and costume makers, and production management students. Through collaboration with students in other disciplines of theatre, NIDA gave me the chance to appreciate the creativity and imagination the acting students practice in the classroom spills over into and is shared by peers working behind the scenes. In this ever-shrinking, gloablised world, my time at NIDA enabled me to foster meaningful relationships with fellow artists who live on the opposite side of the globe; relationships that I hope will in time provide great collaborations where our differences are our strengths".
