NIDA is unique in that the four central courses in Production, Production Crafts (costume, properties and scenery construction), Design and Acting train together through the practical production of plays.
Learning theatre-making under professional conditions is our prime principle.
Productions are directed by skilled staff and invited professionals and every aspect of the productions are interpreted and created by the students themselves - from sometimes elaborate costumes to a special prop or video. Our production values are amongst the highest and in every aspect proclaim the skills of our students and staff who work closely together in a creative and supportive environment.
NIDA productions are primarily concerned with the pursuit of artistic excellence. They are NIDA's most important teaching activity and follow professional procedures, in particular, careful pre-planning. Plays are chosen with regard to the educational needs of the course, the company of actors, the needs of design, production, and production crafts students, as well as workshop facilities and public interest. NIDA productions are a microcosm of the industry, with every element of the production from lighting and sound to set construction and costumes being produced by our students.
Approximately twenty-five productions are staged during the NIDA play season each year. Applicants and the general public are welcome and encouraged to attend these productions. Play Season details including specific dates and performance information are featured on our website under WhatsOn
