Parade Theatres describes the four theatre spaces of NIDA embraced under one banner – Parade Theatre, Parade Playhouse, Parade Studio and Parade Space. The name is inspired by NIDA’s original Parade Theatre and acknowledges NIDA’s long standing connection to the ‘Parade’ in name and place. The old Parade Theatre was a lecture hall until it was converted into a theatre space for the Old Tote Theatre Company in 1969, and it then became NIDA’s major theatre in 1988. The Commonwealth Government’s historic building was replaced by funding from the Centenary of Federation Funding and the award winning new NIDA Building was officially opened by the Prime Minister, the Honorable John Howard MP on October 26, 2001.
On April 23, 2002 the new Parade Theatre as part of the new NIDA Building was officially opened by Mel Gibson. The NIDA graduate was one of the generous benefactors who donated money to complete the building.
The first production in the new Parade Theatre opened on July 17, 2002. It was Country Music the Australian premiere of a new play by another NIDA graduate and teacher, Nick Enright.
The second production in 2002 was another Australian premier, Jarrabin, former artistic Director of NIDA John Clark’s adaptation of Dorothy Hewitt’s The Jarrabin Trilogy.
Since then the Parade Theatre and the other venues in the Parade Theatres complex have been utilised by NIDA and most of the top arts companies in New South Wales including Sydney Festival, Sydney Theatre Company, Ensemble Theatre and Bell Shakespeare Company.
The facilities of the Parade Theatres can be hired to anyone subject to availability. The school has initial preference and gets to make its bookings for the year. The remaining dates are then made available to outside hirers. Traditionally the school presents three seasons of plays over two weeks by Second and Third Year Students.
