ABOUT PROPERTIES

Turn your talent for thinking conceptually, inventing and making things into a career with a Bachelor of Dramatic Art in Properties from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Australia’s premier performing arts and entertainment education and training institution. This three-year full-time course is the only degree course in Australia in this specialist area and is highly regarded in the industry. It will transform you into a skilled properties construction professional with all the technical and management knowledge you need to move into a successful career in theatre, film and television.

With an elite group of students, you’ll study the disciplines of prop making, life drawing, puppetry, prosthetics, sculpting, furniture making, scenic art and model making for theatre, film and television, as well as learning how to manage a props department. And of course you’ll get your hands dirty, building your own projects from the word go. You’ll road test them too – collaborating with a multidisciplinary production team, you’ll help to realise spellbinding NIDA productions from the ground up. In your final year, you’ll develop real-world skills, experience and contacts with an industry secondment that will prepare you to join the ranks of our many successful graduates as a fully fledged properties construction professional.

NIDA’s Properties courses develops students across all techniques of prop making such as life drawing, puppetry, prosthestics, electronics, model-making, joinery and technical drawing to name a few.

Students accepted into the Properties program are trained by leaders in their field. Students are also exposed to the influences of guest lecturers in the arts and entertainment industry from both Australia and internationally, an Artist-in-Residence program, and are offered the opportunity to interact with the profession to build and sustain a productive career in the arts.
