All applicants for the Design, Production, Production Crafts, Directing, Voice and Movement Studies courses are invited to attend an interview. With the exception of Movement Studies applicants, preparation for the interview requires completion of a project. Details of the projects are available below.
You should also bring to the interview supporting material, such as design or craft work, technical or life drawings, production plans or other evidence to demonstrate your ability, potential or interest in the arts entertainment industry. Supporting material may be retained for further assessment.
You are required to do several things in preparation for your interview:
First you must submit your Application Form. Within three weeks we will provide you with details of your interview time. Please provide only brief details of your experience on the application form, as this will be discussed in more detail at your interview.
You will also be required to return a Course Questionnaire prior to the interview which will allow you to go into greater detail about your interests in theatre and in your chosen course. You may also be asked to discuss whether you have the financial resources to support yourself at NIDA and some indication of your health and well-being as NIDA courses are physically demanding. (Successful applicants are required to complete a health questionnaire before commencing the course).
The Course Questionnaire will be sent to you with a letter detailing your interview time and date. Complete this as soon as possible and send it back to NIDA before coming to your interview.
You must also prepare a project specific to your chosen course. This too will be discussed at your interview. Please bring your project to the interview - do not send it in advance. Make sure that your name is clearly marked on all project materials and that you keep a copy of any written material you prepare as some of your project may be retained by NIDA for further consideration.
A Project Information Sheet specific to your chosen course will be sent to you with your questionnaire and interview letter. The project information for entry to the 2009 courses will be available from 1 July 2008.
For Design and Production applicants - the documents below include the plan of the stage required for your projects, using a scale of 1:100 mm so it can be printed onto A4 paper. You will be mailed an A3 size of this plan at a scale of 1:50 mm. Please note you are required to build a model using a scale of 1:25 mm.

Read the information sheet carefully and prepare your project well ahead of time. Do not leave it until the last minute. If you have any questions about the project please feel free to contact us.
The plays we have selected for your project (list to be available by 1 July) should be readily available from your local library and most bookshops. Should you have any difficulty obtaining any of these texts please contact one of the Suggested Bookshops.
Applicants for the Directing, Movement Studies and Voice Studies courses may be required to attend a second interview and may be asked to direct others in new or scripted areas.
Masters applicants must meet high entry standards and must complete specific projects and submit thesis proposals.
What to bring to the interview
- Bring your project to the interview. Please don't send it in advance. You must send in only your questionnaire before the interview
- You may also bring a portfolio to the interview with a selection of your art, craft, life drawings and/or photographic work. Please bring prints only as slide or video facilities are not available
- For Design and Production Crafts applicants, bring a selection of soft pencils (2B, 3B) and a block of cartridge paper (350mm x 250mm) to the interview in order to undertake some improvisational drawing.
The Interview
- Please remember to send your questionnaire in advance so NIDA staff can read over this before meeting you in preparation for the interview
- You should be prepared to spend most of the day at your interview. The interview is in two parts
- First you will be told about NIDA, about your chosen course and what will happen during the individual interview. There will be an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about NIDA or about the interview itself
- Each applicant will then be interviewed individually for approximately 40 minutes. During the interview, we will discuss your project: your ideas about theatre, film, television, art, design and so on, and why you want to study at NIDA. We will also discuss the financial resources you will need to support yourself at NIDA and your health and well-being
- During the day you may also be asked to complete some improvisational drawing or other related tasks. You may also meet other staff members and students
- You may be recalled for a second interview on another day. If so, you will be told what to expect and how to prepare
- NIDA may keep all or part of your project until the final selection of applicants is made. Make sure your name is clearly marked on all project materials. Please keep a copy of all written work as this will not be returned. The project (except for written work) will then be available for collection from NIDA during office hours. Interstate applicant's projects will only be returned on request
- NIDA recognises that auditions and interviews can be stressful, but every effort will be made to ensure your experience will be as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Remember the more time and effort you put into the project in advance, the better prepared you will be and the more you will enjoy the interview and discussion. The interview is designed to give you the very best opportunity to indicate your potential and readiness to study at NIDA
- The interview process is friendly, informal and open. We try to make it enjoyable and productive. However misunderstandings can occur. Should you feel any concern with the interview process, or with what is said to you during the course of the interview, please express your concern immediately or talk it over with a member of the interview panel before you leave.
The Result
Successful applicants for all NIDA courses will be selected in about the second week of December and will be advised by telephone and in writing that they have been accepted. Unsuccessful applicants for the non-Acting courses who have been interviewed will also be advised in writing.
Please note that it is not possible to provide you with an individual assessment of your application or interview, either orally or in writing.
