Many dancers' careers come to an end at a time their imagination, knowledge and experience are at a peak. The Movement Studies course at NIDA was established to assist experienced dancers find new careers as teachers, consultants and physical theatre specialists by expanding their knowledge to include dramatic theatre practices and by applying their experience and creativity to working with actors.
Please note that the Graduate Diploma and Masters courses in Movement Studies offer highly specialised training for the arts entertainment industry, and therefore may not be offered by NIDA every year.
The Graduate Diploma of Dramatic Art in Movement Studies and the Master of Dramatic Art in the stream of Movement Studies will not be provided in 2009.
Graduate Diploma of Dramatic Art | Movement Studies
DURATION
The Graduate Diploma of Dramatic Art specialising in Movement Studies is a one-year full-time course.
AIM
The course is designed to provide a transitional path for performing artists and dancers who wish to work in the performing arts or in education as movement teachers, movement directors and choreographers for theatre, film and television or as creators of movement theatre. It is also designed to equip theatre makers with a language and means to develop innovative theatre through a more physical performer.
APPROACH
The course has a strong component of practical work. and is physically demanding. It covers topics such as the fundamental qualities of movement, the elements of stage movement, compositional techniques, specific skills, styles and techniques, teaching movement, injury prevention and rehabilitation, dramatic literature and the history of the performing and related arts.
Mornings are devoted to formal class work in the theory of movement and movement teaching, guided by a senior staff member and visiting specialists from the industry. In some classes students work with members of NIDA's Acting and Directing courses. During the afternoons and some evenings, students are assigned to research projects or to activities in the NIDA Play Production Program, where they learn to apply theory to practice.
Class work and practical work culminate in an assignment to a production with responsibility for all movement work. The course concludes with the creation and presentation of an original movement based performance piece to a public audience.
Subjects are Movement Studies, Style and Technique, Composition, Production Planning, Teaching Movement, Repertoire, Acting, Film Studies, Music, History of Theatre, Play Production, Arts Administration and Professional Development.

Enrolment in the Movement Studies stream is limited, as all work is carried out in small groups and there is a great deal of individual tuition.
Applicants seeking admission must:
- have reached the age of 22 before the commencement of the course (in exceptional circumstances this may be waived)
- hold a degree or diploma from a tertiary arts course, or have appropriate professional experience in theatre, dance, film or television
- at an interview, which is part of the application process, demonstrate authority, tact and artistic sensitivity
- be fluent in spoken and proficient in written English language (equivalent to an overall band score of 8.0 IELTS).
All subjects are compulsory. NIDA students are required to complete a confidential health questionnaire to demonstrate their medical fitness to undertake the course and to assist NIDA in its duty of care to students.
The primary criterion for admission to the Movement Studies course is evidence of the applicant's ability and potential to make a career as a movement teacher, movement director or choreographer in the arts entertainment industry or in education. Applicants are not usually considered unless they have considerable professional experience. Applicants are rarely accepted into the course immediately following the completion of another tertiary course.

This course will not be offered in 2009.
AUDITIONS AND INTERVIEWS
When the course is offered, applicants for the Graduate Diploma of Dramatic Art are required to attend an interview. Interviews take place in November and early December in all capital cities of Australia except Canberra. Applicants must attend the interview in person, especially if this is the first application to NIDA. Some applicants may be asked to attend a second interview. For overseas applicants an initial interview by webcam could be considered.
Preparation for the interview requires completion of a questionnaire which will be forwarded by mail following receipt of an application. At the interview applicants may be required to work with applicants for NIDA's Acting Course or with NIDA students in the rehearsal and presentation of short scenes.
FEES
All students are required to pay tuition fees. These fees can either be paid in full at the commencement of each year or eligible students can receive a FEE-HELP loan from the Australian Government up to the FEE-HELP limit to cover all or part of their tuition fees. The FEE-HELP limit is indexed each year.

Master of Dramatic Art | Movement Studies
The Master of Dramatic Art specialising in Movement Studies is a one-year full-time course.
AIM
The Movement Studies stream of the Master of Dramatic Art is intended for highly talented and experienced performing artists, dancers, choreographers and teachers to master the skills required of a professional movement teacher and/or physical theatre creator. It involves an in-depth knowledge of theatre discipline, advanced teaching skills and experience of the process of working creatively with actors and directors in theatre, film and television. The course is full time and often physically demanding.
APPROACH
The course consists of four components:
- practical work which involves the teaching of movement classes
- a research thesis requiring an in-depth study of movement in the performing arts industry or education
- a secondment to a theatre, film, television or dance production or to an appropriate movement or dance teaching organisation for experience in the field
- the creation of a major physical theatre work to be presented to a public audience

The standard educational qualification for entry to the Masters Degree, Movement Studies stream is the NIDA Graduate Diploma, Movement Studies stream. Applicants should also meet the criteria (i) - (vii) listed below.
NIDA also encourages applications from graduates of other institutions who have an arts related degree, who have experience working in the profession as a dancer, physical theatre performer or movement teacher/choreographer, a good knowledge of the discipline and a working knowledge of theatre practice, and who can meet the criteria (i) to (vii) listed below.
It is expected that no more than two students will be admitted to the Movement Studies stream of the Master of Dramatic Art in any one year.
In order to gain admission to the Master of Dramatic Art, Movement Studies stream, applicants must demonstrate:
(i) a special aptitude in the field of movement or exceptional vision for the role of the physical performer (ii) a strong imaginative view of physical theatre and its place in history and society (iii) a secure working knowledge of physiology, physical expression and safety practices (iv) exceptional communication, choreographic and/or teaching/directing skills (v) the ability to work harmoniously in the theatre co-operative (vi) a working knowledge of professional practices in the performing arts (vii) the potential to contribute significantly to the NIDA teaching program.
