ABOUT DIRECTING

Don’t just sit in the chair – inhabit it. Gain the confidence to lead a production team and realise your vision with a one-year full-time directing course at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Australia’s premier performing arts education and training institution. Two degree programs are offered to a select group of highly talented students – a Graduate Diploma of Dramatic Art for developing directors and a Master of Dramatic Art for directors with more experience.

Both are an excellent way for you to gain comprehensive knowledge of the craft of directing with practical exposure to the disciplines of acting, design and technical theatre. At NIDA’s well-appointed facilities in Sydney you’ll work with an experienced teacher and a range of actors, designers, lighting, sound and audiovisual designers to direct your own projects. Masters students will also complete a supervised research project and secondment to a professional production in theatre, film or television.

With training in industry and communication skills you’ll learn how to get your project off the ground, emerging a better leader who can collaborate effectively with artists, technicians and other creatives.

EXPLORE DIRECTING

Internships

The Master of Dramatic Art [Directing] course involves an internship for students to work on a professional production with a theatre, film or television company. The internship allows each student director to observe well-regarded theatre practitioners and directors applying their skills in a professional context. Through these observations each director reflects on his/her own skills in order to improve his/her praxis. Students develop an in-depth knowledge of professional theatre and industry practice, as well as the ability to develop self-awareness and refine their own methods.
