This month Tony Knight, Head of Acting at NIDA answers some questions about the 3 Reality Bites Graduation Plays and the graduating actors.

Why have you chosen these three plays for the graduating class?

Because they provide a wonderful showcase for all 23 actors. They also all have an interesting political bent which, given the looming election, is particularly relevant.

The actors are at the end of three years of training - what do you think audiences will see when they come along to the graduation plays?

Wonderful acting, as well as student designers, lighting, sound, sets, props and costumes who have all been working extremely hard on the productions. The work of all the third-year students from all courses at NIDA is on display. You will also see a confidence and skill that has evolved over their three years training.

What makes this year’s plays relevant to young people?

Young people will hopefully feel inspired by the way these three plays present a voice of dissent in these troubled times.

What makes NIDA’s graduation plays good value? Is there better theatre in Sydney at this price?

No. They represent the best value for money in Sydney! These graduation productions are where you can see the stars of tomorrow. Designers, production personnel and actors who will go on to work on a wide range of projects such as the Beijing Olympics, local and international theatre and film.

Will you shed a tear when the actors take their final bow?

Yes of course, I always do. I’m usually a blubbering mess. But I will be full of confidence and joy that they are about to embark on a new stage of their life and their career.
