Introducing Rhys Chapman a first year props student in the Production Crafts course.

How did you feel on your first day at NIDA?
It was a kind of exciting apprehensive feeling. I was excited because of what I had heard from other students from my course and apprehensive because of  NIDA’s reputation. I’ve also gotten lost a lot…

What has struck you about studying at NIDA?
The great interaction between students and staff. Really positive.

If your life was a theatre act what would it be called?
Chapman on Chapman. The introspective piece. It would be a slightly inaccurate or warped autobiography.

Why did you want to come to NIDA?
Through the whole three years you get to work with all types of props to see which speciality you might want to take. I think I probably favour sculpting and mould-making. I also wanted to come here for the industry-based contacts that can be made through the staff and being associated with NIDA - With props being such a small industry your name can get around really quickly.

Most treasured theatrical moment?
Seeing Exit the King with Geoffrey Rush. Because he was amazing! The Prague Quadrenielle, Venice Bienelle. It was inspiring to get exposure to what’s happening in theatre and learning institutions around the world. There were some really surprising countries designing: South Korea, which I didn’t think had a strong theatre scene. But they were very impressive and progressive.

What prompts you to act?
Problem-solving. Working with a designer and helping them to realise their vision.

Ever been upstaged?
Never!

Any advice for budding young thespians?
Get some experience first. Volunteer or get some work experience after you finish school. Try as many things as possible. Make up your own mind after giving it a go.
