Dear <~~First~~>,
Welcome to the first edition of Box Seat for 2009!
This year NIDA commemorates its 50th Birthday. It is both a time to celebrate magnificent past achievements and signpost exciting plans for the future. Throughout 2009 NIDA will be showcasing students' work past and present, within a broad range of performance styles. The 2009 Sydney Theatre Awards have already showcased the importance of NIDA graduates to Australian theatre with graduates garnering awards including Best Actress in a Musical, Best Actress in a Lead Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Newcomer, Best Set Design, Best Costume Design and Best New Australian Work. This adds to accolades received by graduates in 2008 including two Oscar nominations, an Emmy nomination, a BAFTA nomination, a Golden Globe nomination, three Inside Film Awards, two AFI Awards, two Helpmann Awards, the Premier's Literary Awards and an AWGIES Award.
It's clear we have plenty to celebrate! Events and initiatives to take part in this auspicious year include: Currency House Platform Paper Launch & NAISDA Welcome to Country, 50th Birthday Party & Graduate Reunion, the development of an Artist in Residence Program, a new Play Commission Program, a joint venture film with AFTRS and the NIDA Foundation Trust Gala. As part of the celebrations NIDA Open Program will be presenting a new verbatim play written by Linden Wilkinson, directed by Jennifer Hagan and performed by Open Program students from 26 to 28 February.
NIDA Open Program welcomes back our returning youth students as well as eager newcomers for our popular youth drama program in February. Young adults 15 to 20 years can also audition for the year-long part-time youth studios in February and the autumn adult short course program is now available for online bookings.
The Parade Theatres are currently enjoying an influx of Sydney Festival patrons for the exceptional Gate Theatre performances and will soon welcome back the NIDA third year acting students to the stage. These students will be working with industry professionals to present a hilarious 'Season of Comedies' from the end of March. We are excited that international guest, French director Jean-Luc Prevost will be joining us to direct a new piece based on the work of Molière.
