BOX SEAT | February 2009 |

Dear <~~First~~>,
Happy 50th Birthday NIDA!
This month marks the official launch of NIDA’s 50th birthday celebrations. It’s an opportunity to acknowledge the past achievements of this iconic institution and all those who have been nurtured within these walls over the past half century. It’s also an opportunity to signpost the NIDA of the future and I look forward to sharing our aspirations and new initiatives with our supporters as we move through 2009.
On 21 February 2009, NIDA will host its 50th Birthday Party and Graduate Reunion which promises to be a spectacular event. Current NIDA design students have worked to prepare a showcase of “decade rooms” across the whole of the NIDA campus. It will be a memorable occasion for NIDA alumni and special guests who will have an opportunity to catch up with old friends and reunite with staff and tutors from the past and present. I look forward to sharing some of these memories with you in the next edition of Box Seat.
One of the new initiatives we are launching this year is an Artist-in-Residence program. Each year, we intend to invite leading arts practitioners to work across the school, bringing skills which may be new to the NIDA program. Peter King joins us from Melbourne as the inaugural Artist-in-Residence. He is leading NIDA’s design and production students in a multi media project in collaboration with the University of New South Wales. The project will culminate in a production entitled Tektonic and at this stage we are planning a four site multi media experience spread across both campuses.
I have now been in post 10 months as Director/CEO and am beginning to see how we might tackle the many challenges of performing arts training going forward. I believe that NIDA is vital to the creative life of Australia and must continue to discover and nurture the future leaders of the arts and entertainment industry. If you would like to share your thoughts on the role NIDA should play within the cultural infrastructure of Australia, please email me at director@nida.edu.au.
2009 will be an exciting year, filled with projects which take creative risks and broaden the experiences of all associated with NIDA. I look forward to both celebrating the past and sharing NIDA’s future with you.
Lynne Williams. Director/CEO

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST by Oscar Wilde | directed by Kevin Jackson.
The World's Most Perfect Comedy. This is a trivial comedy for serious people.
Take a delicious dip into the verbal acrobatics of Oscar Wilde. This story is still as valid today as it was in 1895. It twists and turns in that typically period way heightened by the presentation of each actor like a jewel in a box by director Kevin Jackson.
Every person should see The Importance of Being Earnest several times in their lifetime.
Win a double pass by answering the following question: "Who do Jack and Algy pretend to be?"
31 March - 4 April 2009, Parade Theatre
Please email your answer and postal address to marketing@nida.edu.au with ‘Earnest’ in the Subject line.

On 2 December, 1999, at Glenbrook, a commuter train crashed into the back of the almost stationary Indian Pacific. Seven and a half metres of train was reduced to fifty centimetres on impact. This new Australian verbatim play presented by NIDA Open Program as part of NIDA’s 50th celebrations uses the real words of the people involved to explore the explosive emotions surrounding the Glenbrook rail disaster. Written by Linden Wilkinson, directed by Jennifer Hagan and performed by NIDA Open Program students.
For your chance to win a double pass to A Day in December, answer the following question: What is Verbatim Theatre?
Email the correct response to marketing@nida.edu.au with 'December' in the subject line.

THE POPULAR MECHANICALS by Keith Robinson,Tony Taylor directed by Darren Gilshenan It's like Elizabethan Idol for tradesmen in tights.
This is an Australian classic full of larrikin style humour. Where else can you see a bunch of medieval tradesmen try to be Shakespearian actors? This is an actor’s worst nightmare but an audience’s voyeuristic dream as we identify and laugh Idol style, as ordinary people, with their fear and desperation.
31 March - 4 April 2009 | Parade Playhouse

A fabulous interactive promenade through the world of Molière’s theatre with lots of surprises along the way. Wear comfortable shoes as you won’t be sitting still!
