This month we chat with Bridie Carter, a NIDA Acting graduate who has most recently appeared in McLeod's Daughters and wowed audiences with her winning performance in Dancing with the Stars. In NIDA's 50th year, we interview Bridie as one of our ambassadors.
Most memorable NIDA experience?
I will never forget getting the call from Tony Knight offering me a place at NIDA - I was 21 and it was more than a dream come true.
Also, acting my way through an earthtremor in the NIDA Studio in Tony Knight's ART OF SUCCESS. Glenn Hazeldeine and I watched a glass fall and smash and just kept on going....as you do.....
If your life were a theatre act what would it be called?
It used to be A Comedy of Errors. Thank God it is no longer!
What’s the drama in your life?
In front of the camera and on the stage these days. Simple and uncomplicated suits me well.
Favourite spot for pre-theatre dinner?
Home. Everything is a mad rush and life is busy - I am grateful to even get to the theatre, dinner's a big ask!!
Most treasured performing moment?
I never, ever thought I'd say this - (though, Keith would understand) but.....performing my Freestyle Dance on Dancing With The Stars Final was one of the most recent and exhillerating and creative and challenging moments on stage and screen I have performed.
What prompts you to act?
Everything. I have always done it. I still love it as much today as when I was a kid. I have realised what a privilege it is to have a job to act in! There's this thing about telling stories I just can't get away from. I am as passionate today as I have ever been about our Industry - especially now! I love the fact that there is always more to learn, more challenges.
Ever been upstaged?
Many a time. Shockingly. I have learnt a lot from these situations - the good ones and the really selfish, shitty ones!
Advice for all budding actors?
If its what you love - do it! And don't give up. Be in it for the long haul! Practice your craft, and cherish it. Don't aim for mediocre - it's so boring. Be the best person and actor you can possibly be at any given moment! Respect the privilege of having a place to perform. Listen!!!!!!!!!!!
