ABOUT THE SEASON

The graduating directors' choices of short plays reveal a pre-occupation with strong writing related to the human need to make connections.

In a fragmented world that makes little sense playwrights Ionesco and Koltes desperately try to make intimate connections in The Bald Soprano and In the Solitude of Cotton Fields.

Often the past and memory come to haunt us as we try to connect in the present as in Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive and Tennessee Williams’ This Property is Condemned.

Sometimes we even need to resort to fantasy to create personal connections as in John Herbert’s Fortune and Men’s Eyes and Tennessee Williams’ And Tell Sad Stories of the Death of Queens.

Ironically, in what may seem a tragic perspective, these plays also reveal an odd or even outrageous humour. Drag queens, clown-like characters, and wistful eccentrics populate these works.
