Anouilh's powerful and compact play focuses on the conflict between political expediency and human decency. The play is as relevant to Australia in 2003 as it was when first produced during the Nazi occupation of Paris. Antigone became a rallying call for civil disobedience. Because the story and title were based on Sophocles' classical Greek tragedy, the Nazis failed to see the play's revolutionary message.
