NIDA BUILDING

The new NIDA Building is the achievement of many people: the teaching staff, management and graduates whose knowledge and skill have combined with the architects to create one of the finest theatre complexes in the world.” – Elizabeth Butcher, NIDA General Manager.

With the opening of the new NIDA complex in October 2001, Sydney gained one of its most complete and versatile entertainment and event venues. It is also one of Sydney’s most attractive spaces. The new NIDA Building won the 2002 Sulman prize for Public Architecture. The building contains the Parade Theatre and the Parade Studio, The Reception Room, a small film and television studio – the Reg Grundy Studio, a library, a rehearsal room and extensive workshop area. It was designed by Hassell Architecture and Peter Armstrong in close collaboration with the NIDA staff. It was funded by the Commonwealth Government’s Centenary of Federation Fund and opened by the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. John Howard, on the 26th October, 2001.

The new building is linked to the original NIDA Building opened in 1988 which incorporates the Parade Playhouse and Parade Space, eight rehearsal rooms, costume and props workshops, lighting and sound studios, teaching and administration space.

Combined together the old and the new NIDA provide an unparalleled facility to train students for careers in theatre, film and television. Parade Theatres, with its four theatres and adjacent foyer spaces exists as a performing arts centre in its own right within the NIDA complex.

All spaces are available for hire.
